| GSI Opposes I-1125 |

The Board of Trustees of Greater Spokane Incorporated (GSI) recently voted unanimously to oppose Initiative 1125 (I-1125).
I-1125 would require that road and bridge tolls be set by the legislature and be project-specific. Currently, state law designates a non-partisan commission - the Transportation Commission - to set toll rates for state highways and bridges. Management of our transportation system is best handled by a non-partisan commission that's focused on transportation issues. If there are limitations on projects funded through tolls, those projects would compete for the same transportation funds that our region receives for the North Spokane Corridor, Interstate 90 and other projects. If I-1125 is passed by voters in November, the progress of transportation projects in Eastern Washington may be delayed.
I-1125 would make Washington the only state in the nation that allows its legislature to set toll rates. GSI does not believe it is the job of the legislature to set tolling rates for roads and bridges. We support and trust the non-partisan Transportation Commission and its ability to set toll rates for highways and bridges.
