In this slower economy, we find it even more important to drive awareness of Spokane as a great place to do business, and it continues to work. While our "pipeline" of leads has slowed, we continue to get calls from businesses looking to see if they can move to Spokane. While we are trying to target specific industries (health science and services, manufacturing, aerospace, clean technology and energy efficiency) and in regions where we present a comparatively lower cost of doing business, we are working with companies across a wide range of industries. In fact, I just got off the phone with an East Coast-based company looking to expand their food operation into the Pacific Northwest. They are looking at Spokane because they like the quality of life aspects, and Spokane gets them close to their target markets. You just never know. What we normally tell prospect companies is to closely compare the cost of doing business (over the long haul, that's what should be driving your location decisions). The affordability advantages of this region continue to position us well. Of course, it doesn't hurt to have so many quality golf courses, lakes, and ski resorts so close to home!
