Proposal would cut $2 billion from the state budget. UPDATED
Washington Governor Chris Gregoire announced her proposal for cuts to the state budget in order to save $2 billion. Among the cuts were the elimination of the Basic Health Plan, which would save $48 million. Gregoire's proposal also included a 15 percent cut from state payments to colleges and universities. Read more from The-Spokesman Review. Update: Governor Gregoire explained her cuts in a letter to legislators. "After earlier rounds of tough budget cutting, it is clear to me that the across-the-board reductions - the only tool available under law to a governor - are untenable," Gregoire wrote, in part. "Nonetheless, given the magnitude of the shortfall, it is necessary that we look to each state agency, program, board and commission for additional savings." |
