Washington Federation of State Employees File Lawsuit Print E-mail

debtThe Washington Federation of State Employees filed a lawsuit on Tuesday that hopes to reverse the end of automatic cost-of-living pay raises.

This lawsuit would impact the retirees in two of the state’s older pension plans, Public Employees Retirement System Plan 1 and Teachers Retirement System Plan 1. About 109,000 members of the pension plans were affected.

When the state passed this legislature to eliminate the cost-of-living adjustments (COLA), they saved about $400 million in pension contributions.

In 2010 when the last automatic COLA took place the estimated value increase for one retiree who worked 30 or more years was about $678.80 a year.
