Decision on final map to come before 2012 election.
The Washington State Redistricting Commission released its initial recommendations as to what the state's new congressional and legislative districts should look like for the 2012 elections. The process is the result of the state's population numbers from the 2010 census.
The commission's goal is to ensure each district is as close to equal in population as possible. Washington's newly-created 10th Congressional District has a number of different recommendations made to it. Republican Slade Gorton proposed a mostly rural district that touches the Washington-Canada border.
Gorton's fellow Republican - Tom Huff - would make the 10th District a majority-minority district, which would be made up of parts of south Seattle, Kent, Renton and SeaTac.
Democrats Tim Ceis and Dean Foster both proposed the district include Olympia and Pierce County.
