State Government Shutdown Looming? Print E-mail

GovernmentGovernor says she has no plans to extend the 30-day special session.

Last week Governor Chris Gregoire indicated she did not want another special session to settle budget talks. Earlier this week she requested an operating budget by the end of the week.

Lawmakers in the House and Senate still have not reached an agreement on an operating or capital budget, and have begun preparing for a potential government shutdown.

The state government has never been shutdown in Washington. The Office of Financial Management Director Marty Brown said a shutdown will likely close all but some public-safety operations, and those required by the constitution.

The 30-day special session ends next week.
