The Washington Senate passed House Bill 1795, which will allow the state's public universities to set their own tuition for the next four years if it is signed into law.

The goal of the bill is to help the universities make up some of the losses felt after state budget cuts. Washington is one of a few states that has the legislature set tuition. If signed into law, it would take affect this fall.

The governing body of each school would set the tuition rates.

The state legislature is in the middle of a 30-day special session.
