State legislators work to limit a “retire-rehire” policy allowing state employees to receive both a pension and a paycheck.
House Bill 1083 was reintroduced into the special session. The bill allows the re-hiring of state employees on a part-time basis, however, if they work too many hours in a year, their pension benefits will be temporarily frozen. Similar measures have been seen in the Senate.
The Seattle Times discovered that 2,000 state employees were collecting both a pension and a salary last year, costing state taxpayers $85 million annually.
