“The City of Spokane is the ideal location for an expanded WWAMI program. The University District’s proximity to the downtown core, the Spokane River and our world-class medical district creates a vibrant and welcoming environment for students.”

– Mayor Mary Verner, City of Spokane

The University of Washington and Washington State University share a vision for expanding medical education and research in Spokane on the Riverpoint Campus. Their 40-year partnership in the WWAMI program means many of the assets needed already exist in eastern Washington: twenty first-year medical students already study in Spokane. Many return for 3rd and 4th year clerkships. Spokane is the largest medical center between Seattle and Minneapolis and is a very cost-effective location for this expansion. Area hospitals, clinics, physicians and related services create a rich environment for students and have capacity to expand clerkship and residency sites. WSU’s planned Biomedical & Health Sciences Building can be expanded to accommodate necessary classrooms and labs. The convergence of these assets means Spokane could accommodate 100 to 120 students by 2013.
