The Spokane region is an urban center serving rural eastern Washington and northern Idaho. Spokane evolved as a regionally-based service economy which took advantage of it’s proximity to transportation, historic settlements and access to the Spokane River. Regional services include the area of health services which encompasses several hospitals and specialists, the colleges and universities located in Spokane, the concentration of financial and business service industries and the concentration of State and Federal government services. Manufacturing also flourishes due to the nexus of the Bonneville dam power generation, rail systems and the Interstate highway system.
