Let’s pull together some of the headlines of the past week that might be of interest to folks around Spokane, shall we?
WSU: Washington State University had a large contingent at the Washington Biotechnology and Biomedical Association’s Life Science Innovation Northwest Conference earlier this month. Greater Spokane Incorporated was also there, as Spokane made its presence known.
WBBA: At that same conference, Paw Print Genetics’ Lisa Shaffer was named one of six “women to watch” in the Life Sciences industry.
The Spokesman-Review: We’ll start the bidding at $20 million for the next stage of the North Spokane Corridor project! This one involves re-routing a rail line where the future corridor will be, and is funded through the federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) Grant.
KHQ: Vivint, Inc. – the company we recruited to Liberty Lake last month – appeared on KHQ’s Invest Northwest Program last Sunday with Sean Owsley. The company is on the cusp of opening and plans to hire up to 400 folks within the next 18 months.
Intellectual Asset Management: For the fourth year in a row, Spokane’s Lee & Hayes was named the nation’s top law firm for patent quality.
The Spokesman-Review: Seven2 and 14four are two creative companies that call Spokane home. Tyler Laffterty (a GSI board member) and Nick Murto are the brains behind those companies, plus other startups, including Access2Experience.
Spokane Journal of Business: North Idaho College will start offering an aerospace training program next month.
The Spokesman-Review: The Spokane community honored Tom Foley last night. Foley was the House Majority Leader from Spokane and represented our region well, if Riverfront Park and the Centennial Trail, among other items, are any evidence.
Seattle Business Magazine: Two Spokane-area companies are on the annual list of Best Places to Work: Provisional Recruiting + Staffing and Career Path Services, the latter of which claimed the top spot in the nonprofit category.
NASDAQ: Brooks Automation will acquire Spokane’s Matrical, Inc. for $10 million. That’s a global company purchasing a local company. Matrical must have been doing something right!
The Spokesman-Review: Spokane County Commissioners will place a levy on this fall’s ballot to buy property in the Accident Potential Zone (APZ) at one end of the runway at Fairchild Air Force Base, all in an effort to prevent encroachment.

WSU: The big building on the Riverpoint Campus that is nearing completion has a new name: The Pharmaceutical and Biomedical Sciences building. The name represents the inclusion of the College of Pharmacy, which will also have all four years of studies in Spokane starting this fall.
The Spokesman-Review: Medicaid expansion begins in Washington on Jan. 1, 2014 under the name “Apple Health.”
